Katarina Witt began to ice skate as early as age 5 years. Her natural talents began to show, she received an entry at an Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in kids with a sporting talent. This was where she was introduced to her coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough in 1982, after she placed second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the game. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating gold medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. The following year she was able to win an even tighter contest. In fact, she didn't win the free-skating contest, but won gold based on performance during the mandatory figure and short programme. Witt became the first female repeatedly crowned winner of figure skating following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful as an actress. The team finished seventh, but she wowed the crowd despite not winning the medal. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
